Shopping Trolley Hygiene
publicity has been given recently to the problem of shopping
trolley hygiene as the results of some well publicised research
has emerged. Researchers from the University of Arizona tested
sixty grocery store shopping carts for their bacterial content,
and made alarming findings. In addition, studies by the Centres
for Disease Control in eight other US States has shown conclusively
that shopping trolley handles are consistently sources of
high levels of bacteria & viruses. These have been found
to include diarrhoea-causing Campylobacter, and the life threatening
Salmonella. In addition E.Coli., Staphylococcus, Listeria,
and bacteria counts many times above levels considered safe
have been found to be not uncommon. In the United States,
the problem has become so widely acknowledged that it has
been given the name "shopping cart sickness".

wipes have been used to try to address this problem with only

less effective than generally thought.

Most people spray a surface, and then immediately wipe the
disinfectant off. The disinfectant is therefore not in contact
with the surface long enough to be effective, and the surface
will not be disinfected. Repeated use of this procedure (sub-lethal
dose) allows bacteria to develop resistance to the particular
chemical, to the point where it becomes almost completely
